Japanese striking art built on discipline and technique
Join This Class All ClassesKarate developed on the island of Okinawa, shaped by centuries of local fighting traditions combined with Chinese martial arts introduced through trade contact. It was formally introduced to mainland Japan in the early 20th century, most notably by Gichin Funakoshi (founder of the Shotokan style), who helped standardise its teaching and etiquette. Karate became an official Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2020 Games, cementing its status as one of the world's most widely practiced martial arts.
Karate is governed internationally by the World Karate Federation (WKF), recognised by the International Olympic Committee. In India, karate is represented nationally through recognised state and national karate associations affiliated with the WKF pathway, which conduct grading, championships and international team selection.
Students who reach state, national or international medal standard in recognised martial arts tournaments may become eligible for benefits under Government of India and Tamil Nadu sports schemes — including Khelo India scholarships, Sports Authority of India (SAI) support, and sports-quota consideration in select educational institutions and government recruitment. Eligibility criteria, documentation and scheme availability change from time to time and are decided by the respective government departments — please confirm current rules directly with SAI / the relevant department, or ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.
