Chinese martial art blending combat technique with performance
Join This Class All ClassesWushu is the modern, standardised form of traditional Chinese martial arts (kung fu), developed in China from 1949 onward as the country worked to organise its many regional fighting styles into a unified competitive sport. It draws on centuries of Chinese combat tradition — from Shaolin temple boxing to weapons-based forms — and splits into two main branches: Taolu (choreographed forms demonstrating technique, balance, and power) and Sanda (full-contact sparring). Wushu became an internationally recognised sport through the second half of the 20th century and has been a demonstration or medal event at multi-sport games including the Asian Games.
Wushu is governed internationally by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. In India, Wushu is represented at the national level by the Wushu Association of India, which is affiliated with the IWUF and organises state and national championships that feed into international selection.
Students who reach state, national or international medal standard in recognised martial arts tournaments may become eligible for benefits under Government of India and Tamil Nadu sports schemes — including Khelo India scholarships, Sports Authority of India (SAI) support, and sports-quota consideration in select educational institutions and government recruitment. Eligibility criteria, documentation and scheme availability change from time to time and are decided by the respective government departments — please confirm current rules directly with SAI / the relevant department, or ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.
