Ancient Chinese practice uniting movement, strength and philosophy
Join This Class All ClassesKung Fu (or Gongfu) is an umbrella term for the hundreds of traditional Chinese martial arts styles that developed over more than a thousand years, closely tied to the Shaolin Temple's monastic combat traditions as well as regional family and clan systems (such as Wing Chun, Hung Gar and many others). Unlike modern Wushu, traditional Kung Fu styles are typically taught and preserved through lineage-based schools, each with its own forms, philosophy and history.
Because Kung Fu encompasses many independent traditional styles, there is no single global governing body in the way most modern sports have one; individual styles are often represented by their own federations or lineage associations. In India, Kung Fu is commonly taught and organised through state and national-level Wushu/Kung Fu associations that also oversee modern Wushu competition.
Students who reach state, national or international medal standard in recognised martial arts tournaments may become eligible for benefits under Government of India and Tamil Nadu sports schemes — including Khelo India scholarships, Sports Authority of India (SAI) support, and sports-quota consideration in select educational institutions and government recruitment. Eligibility criteria, documentation and scheme availability change from time to time and are decided by the respective government departments — please confirm current rules directly with SAI / the relevant department, or ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.
